Penn State’s secondary hasn’t been threatened deep very often this season, and when they have it hasn’t been very successful for offenses. They have allowed just five completions of 20 yards or more, with the longest being 32 yards. They will face by far the most effective passing team they have seen this season in Illinois, however, so they need to be wary of the deep passing game.
With Kevin Winston Jr. likely out for weeks to come, playing it safe and trying to limit big plays is the best strategy against teams with the kind of firepower Illinois possesses. It may lead to some long drives for Illinois, but it’s better than letting up quick scores. The Penn State offense is capable of keeping up in a shoot out, but they would rather have the chance to control the game on the ground. Playing sound defense is key to that happening.
