Redshirt-Senior On Prestigious Academic Award Watchlist

California redshirt-senior safety Craig Woodson has been named a semifinalist for the 2024 William V. Campbell Trophy, the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame announced Wednesday.

College football’s premier scholar-athlete award recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.

This year will mark the 66th year of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards Presented by Fidelity Investments, which began in 1959, and the 35th year of the Campbell Trophy®, which was added to the program in 1990. The NFF will announce 12-15 finalists on Oct. 23, and each finalist will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2024 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments.

One of the finalists will be named the winner of the 35th Campbell Trophy® during the 66th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented in Las Vegas on Dec. 10 and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

Woodson was selected for the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District 8 Football Team as both a 2022 sophomore and 2023 junior while being named to the National Football Foundation’s Hampshire Honor Society in both years. The Grand Prairie, Texas, native was a two-time Pac-12 Fall Academic Honor Roll selection in 2001-02.

Off the field, Woodson had a key role in Cal defensive backs’ Incarceration to College Volunteer Service. A recruitment program developed to create sustainable youth justice.

Incarceration to College is an A-G verified Career Training Education college readiness course designed to be taught inside juvenile facilities. Berkeley Underground Scholars creates a pathway for incarcerated, formerly incarcerated and system-impacted individuals into higher education. Craig volunteered for the group as a positive presence and relatable student-athlete role model.
