The Texas Longhorns opened SEC play Saturday against a feisty Mississippi State Bulldogs team.
It has been three years since the University of Texas announced, in conjunction with the Oklahoma Sooners, it was joining the Southeastern Conference. So the buildup to this first contest was literally years in the making.
It’s hard to say if it was nerves or sloppiness, but there were huge chunks of the game where Texas didn’t look like the No. 1 team in the nation.
On offense at least. The defense never looked like it would give up more than a couple scores and indeed they didn’t.
Jaydon Blue had two fumbles, Johntay Cook II dropped a sure touchdown and the Horns took a FG off the board only to turn it over on downs. The offensive line also had a penalty filled day.
The offense was better in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter. Texas scored three second half TDs and won the game 35-13.
