USC football tries to solve the tale of two halves after Week 5

USC football authored a Charles Dickens novel on Saturday. It was a tale of two halves, not cities, against the Wisconsin Badgers. Fortunately, the good stuff in the second half was able to override the bad things the Trojans did in the first half. We wrote:

“The USC Trojans could not have played a worse first half on Saturday against the Wisconsin Badgers. USC football spent the first half booting the football all over the yard at the Los Angeles Coliseum, commiting three turnovers in a balanced way: two on offense, one on special teams, one fumble, one muffed kick, and one interception. USC was sloppy, ragged and soft. The Trojans looked a lot like the team we saw in 2023. It was as though Alex Grinch — part of the Wisconsin coaching staff — was doing some voodoo against his former team. USC played under gleaming, sunny skies in Los Angeles on a goregous late-September afternoon, but the first half was a collection of dark storm clouds and a very gloomy outlook. USC was staring at a horrific loss when it went to the halftime locker room down 21-10.”

Everything changed after halftime, a lot like the Michigan game. Thankfully, USC finished the job this week. The Trojans pulled through to the relief of every Trojan fan at the Coliseum and any Man or Woman of Troy who was watching on television. However, we know this standard isn’t good enough or high enough for the rest of the season. Let’s talk more about USC’s split-personality and the need to get rid of “First-Half USC,” the mutant variant of “Second-Half USC,” the perfect creation which hits all the right notes:

OFFENSIVE LINE NOT IN SYNC

USC is not communicating as crisply as it needs to along its offensive line. Two guys are blocking the same defender while another rusher gets a free run at Miller Moss. Last week at Michigan, players weren’t starting quickly at the snap and were getting beaten to spots. The second half was a…
