Predicting the 12-team College Football Playoff field ahead of Week 6

We are in the middle of the 2024 college football season with conference play taking place across the nation and teams starting to fall into a rhythm in Week 6. With that, the projected College Football Playoff race has been shifting and settling.

There were a few notable outcomes in Week 5 that altered the playoff picture. No. 5 Alabama beat No. 2 Georgia. No. 6 Ole Miss lost to unranked Kentucky. No. 16 Notre Dame beat No. 15 Louisville.

Each week of the year, we update our predictions for which teams are likely to get into the first 12-team playoff. Here’s how our predictions stand going into Week 6.

Playoff Format Refresher: The 12 participating teams will be the five conference champions ranked highest by the CFP selection committee, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and will receive a first-round bye. The fifth conference champion will be seeded where it was ranked or at No. 12 if it is outside the top 12 rankings. Nonconference champions ranked in the top four will be seeded beginning at No. 5. Because of this, the seedings, 1 through 12, could look different than the final rankings.
