UNC football’s offensive keys to upsetting Pitt on Saturday afternoon

When the North Carolina Tar Heels originally scheduled the Pittsburgh Panthers for their Homecoming game, I can’t imagine they expected the Panthers to be undefeated, particularly after the Panthers’ historically bad 2023.

If you closely follow along with any given team’s football schedule, weaker opponents are typically scheduled for Homecoming, giving fans who return to their school a strong chance at witnessing a victory.

That couldn’t be further from the truth this season, with a reeling UNC squad facing a red-hot Pitt team on Saturday, Oct. 5. If anything, it’ll be the visitors celebrating a 5-0 start after 60 minutes in Kenan Stadium.

North Carolina started the season with consecutive victories against Minnesota, Charlotte and NC Central, but struggled for large parts of each win. James Madison exposed the Tar Heels’ weaknesses with a 70-50 domination in Week 4, then Duke scored 21 unanswered second-half points and came back to beat the Tar Heels.

If there’s one thing working for UNC, though, it’s the offense. Omarion Hampton continues to prove why he’s one of the country’s top running backs, while Jacolby Criswell is coming along nicely as North Carolina’s new starting quarterback. Pass-catchers are finally starting to get into a rhythm, too.

The Tar Heels might give up plenty of points to Pitt this coming Saturday, but their offense should continue thriving. If UNC can figure out its offensive line inconsistencies, the offense will be near unstoppable.

What exactly does North Carolina need to do on Saturday to move the football and score points, as players, fans and coaches alike are desperate for a season-saving victory?
