Sometimes coaching changes lead to an on-field spark and some better performance. In the case of Purdue, I’m not sure that’s going to happen.
Purdue fired OC Graham Harrell earlier this week after its 28-10 loss to Nebraska. The Boilermakers were averaging just 21.8 points per game, ranked No. 106 in the nation. That total drops to a minuscule 12.6 points per game when Week 1’s 49-0 win against Indiana State isn’t considered.
Ryan Walters promoted analyst Jason Simmons to offensive coordinator. Simmons was coaching high school football two years ago and only has one year of college coaching experience (RBs coach at Miami (OH) in 2023).
So Purdue’s offense is a mess. But it somehow isn’t as bad as its defense.
The Purdue defense currently ranks No. 117 in the nation with 33.0 points allowed per game. The yardage totals, as one could expect, are not good. Purdue is also the only team in the nation without a single turnover forced.
This is all listed to say: Wisconsin playing a clean, buttoned-up, turnover-free football game will likely lead to a decisive victory. Purdue’s issues on both sides of the football are enough to tip those scales.
