The Rams love Colby Parkinson but he simply hasn’t had much of a connection with Matthew Stafford. Sure, he leads the team with 19 catches, but his average air yards when targeted is only 5.6, the second-lowest on the team (min. 10 targets). And when he does have the ball in his hands, he’s not making defenders miss. His yards after catch over expected is minus-24, the fourth-worst number in the entire NFL, per NFL Pro.
So he’s not only seeing targets close to the line of scrimmage, but he’s also not picking up yards after the catch. It’s time for the Rams to give Davis Allen a bigger opportunity as a receiver, particularly in the red zone. Like Parkinson, he has a big catch radius but he’s significantly better after the catch.
Last season, Allen forced four missed tackles on passing plays, the third-most on the team (per PFF). That was on just 12 receptions. This season, Parkinson has forced zero missed tackles on his 19 catches. Allen had 79 yards after the catch last season compared to 91 for Parkinson on seven fewer catches.
Parkinson can still be an option but he shouldn’t be seeing as many targets as he is.
