Texas A&M (5-1, 3-0 SEC) sits atop the SEC standings entering the first of two bye weeks this season after destroying Missouri (4-1, 1-1 SEC) 41-10 on Saturday afternoon. Reaching 3-0 in conference play, the national media has begun to notice the team in College Station after dismissing them before the season even started.
Led by the return of starting quarterback Conner Weigman, who had missed the last three games due to a shoulder injury, backup quarterback Marcel Reed made the most of his opportunities while helping the Aggies to a 3-0 record in Weigman’s absence, but is still a work in progress from a passing standpoint.
Right out of the gate against the Tigers, Weigman was extremely efficient in the pocket, completing 18/22 for 276 yards while hitting tight windows and several successful deep shots, which opened up the running game, racking up 238 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.
With six games remaining, the Aggies will likely be favorites in every game outside of the season finale vs. the Texas Longhorns. Are the Aggies now a serious contender to make the 12-team College Football Playoffs? Well, there’s plenty of work ahead, but they are certainly in the conversation.
On Tuesday, USA TODAY’s Paul Myberg released his latest playoff projections ahead of Week 7, and while Texas A&M is on a bye week, they remain in the running as they will still lead the SEC in wins no matter Saturday’s outcomes.
