Sure, there’s an inexperience on the offense because of injuries, but in a “next man up” world, the next men up haven’t been prepared to take advantage of their opportunities. That falls on the coaching staff to develop the younger guys.

It starts with Brent Venables and goes down the line to the assistants and analysts. Yes, they’ve won four games, but in their biggest tests against Tennessee and Texas, the Sooners have fallen flat, especially on offense.

When Venables says “We’ve got to get better everywhere,” that starts with the coaching staff and with the head coach in particular. Ultimately, he’s the one responsible for making sure his team is ready to play both physically and mentally. And in two of their last three games, the Sooners haven’t been ready to play on offense.

Venables may not be an offensive guy, but he’s the guy who hired the offensive guy and, as the head coach, is responsible for what happens in every facet of the program.

Injuries can’t be an excuse for what happens on the field every week. At some point, you have to develop the guys you have and put them in a position to succeed. For the second time in three games, the Sooners coaching staff failed to put the offense in a position to succeed.
