John Mateer Added to Maxwell Award Watch List


PULLMAN, Wash. (October 18, 2024) – Washington State quarterback John Mateer was one of 17 players added to the 2024 Maxwell Award Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced this week.
 
The Maxwell Award is presented to the college player of the year. The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.
 
Mateer enters the week with 1,601 passing yards, 13 passing touchdowns and leading the team with 499 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. The redshirt-sophomore opened the season setting a school record with six total touchdowns in his first career start, the most by any Cougar quarterback in their first career start. Mateer followed with another school record in the week two win over Texas Tech, setting the top mark for rushing yards by a quarterback with 197 and added two more rushing touchdowns in the win over Washington in Seattle. In the double-overtime win over San Jose State, Mateer became the first player in program history with 300 pass yards and 100 rush yards, recording 501 yards of total offense along the way, the top total offense mark in the country this season.
 
The Little Elm, Texas native enters the week fourth nationally with 350.0 yards of total offense, seventh with 15.1 yards-per-completion, second in the country with 22 runs of 10+ yards and with 33 missed tackles, the most by any quarterback in the country this season.
