There was some worry surrounding the Los Angeles Chargers exiting the offseason as they did not replace their two departing receivers with a top-end draft pick or high-priced free agent. Instead, the team opted to take Ladd McConkey in the second round to pair with last years first round pick Quentin Johnston in hopes one of them could make an impact. On Sunday in Week 8 against the Saints, McConkey proved to be more than just a role player.
Ladd McConkey’s Week 8 film is sweet. You really see all of the skills (route running, stemming off routes to make an easy target, ball-tracking, YAC) that made him a great prospect translate to the NFL.
And I think you really see Herbert’s immense trust in him on display on… pic.twitter.com/d4QHWQmM9G

McConkey dominated the New Orleans defense all afternoon long, putting together easily his best game of the season. Hauling in 6 catches for 111 yards and a pair of touchdowns, McConkey was a true menace on offense and showed out all the skills that made him one of the first receivers taken on day 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft. With elite acceleration and route quickness, McConkey was able to consistently throw defenders off their coverage and make the most out of a given play.
With quarterback Justin Hebert now clearly trusting McConkey, the connection should only grow as the season goes on. As of this game McConkey has clearly established himself as the top receiving option for the Chargers and could help carry the load offensively moving forward.
