CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference had two defensive standouts in Barrett Carter of Clemson and Sean Brown of NC State recognized as semifinalists for the 40th annual Butkus Award, it was announced today by the Butkus Foundation.
The Butkus Award is given annually to the top linebackers at the high school, collegiate and professional levels.
One of the leaders on the Clemson defense this season, Carter has totaled 39 tackles, including 17 solo stops, 7.0 tackles-for-loss and 3.0 sacks over the Tigers’ first eight games of the season. Tabbed a Midseason All-American by both The Athletic and Sports Illustrated, Carter had 11 tackles and tied his career-high with 3.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack versus Stanford and posted 10 tackles, a sack, and a pass breakup at Florida State.
Brown leads the Wolfpack defense with 63 tackles, highlighted by 31 solo stops, this season. He also has 7.0 tackles-for-loss, 3.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 13 quarterback hurries from his linebacker spot. Brown, who moved from safety to the linebacker position this year, totaled 11 tackles, including 2.0 tackles-for-loss, in the Duke’s Mayo Classic versus Tennessee and recorded a career-high 13 tackles, 1.0 tackle-for-loss and one sack in the win over Northern Illinois.
Finalists will be named on November 25 and winners will be named by December 10, with the professional winner being selected in early 2025.
