Can an unseeded team land a first round upset in the 2024 FCS playoffs? It’s the first year teams No. 9-16 are seeded in the 24-team bracket, so any upsets will need impact players to lead the way. Let’s look at some players who could drive a postseason upset.
Southeast Missouri State QB Paxton DeLaurent
Illinois State allows almost 230 passing yards per game, ranking in the bottom half of the MVFC. Paxton DeLaurent threw for 301 yards and four touchdowns against his last MVFC opponent Southern Illinois earlier this season. Another big day from DeLaurent could take over this playoff game.
UT Martin TEs Tyler Dostin and Max Dowling.
Tyler Dostin and Max Dowling have five reception touchdowns each, both the third most of any tight ends in the playoffs. New Hampshire allowed two different Stony Brook tight ends to score touchdowns in their game earlier this year. If UT Martin’s tight ends can find similar success, the Skyhawks could knock off the Wildcats.

Tennessee State DL Eriq George
Montana was the most sacked team in the Big Sky during the regular season. That’s where a guy like Eriq George could come in handy. Even though George doesn’t lead Tennessee State in sacks, he’s one of the better pass rushers on a deep squad with versatility to move across the defensive front. If he can lead the Tigers with a bunch of QB pressures, TSU could pull off a road upset.
