Shaw Nominated for Broyles Award

PISCATAWAY, N.J. โ€“ Running backs coach Damiere Shaw represents Rutgers football as a nominee for the Broyles Award, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced Tuesday. The award honors college football’s top assistant coaches. Shaw is in his fifth season on staff and second coaching the running backs.

“I think Coach Shaw is a special coach,” head coach Greg Schiano said. “I think he has everything you need. He’s got great relationship skills, he’s got great X’s and O’s, great technique, passion for the game. I think he’s got a bright future.”

Under Shaw’s guidance, RB Kyle Monangai led the Big Ten with 1,262 rushing yards in 2023 and has followed that up with 1,150 yards so far this season. He became the first Scarlet Knight to reach 1,000 in a season since 2012 last year and is now the fourth player to post back-to-back such campaigns, the first since Ray Rice (2005-07).

Monangai recently became the third player in program history to reach 3,000 career yards and needs 23 to move into second on the program leaderboard. The Roseland, New Jersey, native owns 13 games with 100 or more yards and has scored 27 career touchdowns (26 rushing, one receiving) after arriving at Rutgers with two power conference offers.

Despite missing a game, Monangai leads the Big Ten with 225 carries in 2024. In the game Monangai did not play, RB Antwan Raymond and RB Ja’shon Benjamin stepped in to combine for 139 rushing yards in a win over Minnesota. RB Samuel Brown V contributed 201 rushing yards and four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) in five games played.

After rushing for 128.2 yards per game the season before taking over the position, Rutgers jumped to 168.7 in 2023 and is up to 173.4 through 11 games in 2024 to rank fourth in the Big Ten.

Shaw, from Chester, Pennsylvania, previously earned a spot on the 247Sportsย 30Under30 list in 2022.ย He is one of 65 nominees in this year’s Broyles class selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country.

The Scarlet Knights are bowl eligible and are poised to earn the 13th bowl invitation in program history. For fans interested in receiving bowl ticket information, please submit theย 2024 Rutgers Bowl Interest Form. Details will be sent out as they become available in the coming weeks.
