Award Goes To Best Assistant Coach In The Country
California defensive coordinator/inside linebacker coach Peter Sirmon has been named a Broyles Award nominee, the Broyles foundation announced Tuesday.
Sirmon is one of 65 nominees selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee and current head coaches.
Sirmon is a native of Walla Walla, Washington, and is in seventh season at Cal, including his fifth as the Golden Bears’ defensive coordinator. His defense in 2024 is the ACC’s top scoring defense (20.7) that is allowing 12.1 points per game fewer than the 32.8 it allowed in 2023.
Cal’s defense under Sirmon is tied for second in the country with 17 interceptions and is among the country’s top 30 in several defensive team categories, including turnovers gained (8th, 22), team passing efficiency defense (16th, 112.22), rushing defense (17th, 106.4 ypg), team sacks (19th, 2.82), defensive touchdowns (21st, 2) and scoring defense (29th, 20.7).
The Broyles Award was created in 1996 recognizing Coach Frank Broyles’ legacy of selecting and developing great assistants during his hall of fame career as head coach at Arkansas. A selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semifinalists, five finalists and an overall winner.
