Los Angeles will also be without linebacker Denzel Perryman (groin) and cornerback Cam Hart (ankle) for the second straight game, while safety Alohi Gilman (hamstring) is also out. That inserts a combination of Troy Dye and Nick Niemann into the starting lineup at linebacker, Tarheeb Still at corner, and Elijah Molden at safety, which doesn’t seem all that bad. Still and Molden have at least been contributing all season.
But Gilman’s absence raises a key question: who is the third safety when the Chargers enter dime packages? Los Angeles has often brought Gilman, Molden, and Derwin James onto the field at the same time this season. However, the next safety on the depth chart is Marcus Maye (claimed on waivers from the Dolphins on Wednesday) or Tony Jefferson, who must be elevated from the practice squad. At cornerback, the Chargers’ only healthy backup would be Deane Leonard; Shaun Wade or Dicaprio Bootle would have to be elevated from the practice squad to serve as a fifth corner.
