An area of emphasis for the St. Louis Battlehawks over the past couple of years has been their secondary. They’ve consistently looked to improve upon this unit specifically, and continue to bring in new pieces. Most recently, the Battlehawks signed DB Nick Whiteside who brings even more depth and talent to the squad.

Nick Whiteside is a young prospect who’s got plenty of potential at this level to succeed. Nick played all of his college football at Saginaw Valley State. He immediately made an impact upon arrival, recording 15 tackles and four PBU’s as a freshman in 2018.
Whiteside continued to trend upwards at Saginaw Valley State from year to year. While they missed the season in 2020, Nick returned in 2021 and earned first-team All-GLIAC honors, while being named GLIAC Defensive Back of the Year after posting 40 tackles, eight PBU’s, and four interceptions.

Nick actually suffered a torn achilles at the end of that campaign, but returned the next year and put up excellent numbers once again, with 30 tackles and two picks. Unfortunately, a broken foot cut that season a bit short as well.
From there, after fully healing, Whiteside was signed by the Washington Commanders as an UDFA in 2023. Nick was activated for a couple of games that year, and remained on the practice squad up until August of 2024.
