Getting to know Colorado football QB Kaidon Salter

Wednesday marked the beginning of a possible quarterback competition for Colorado, as Liberty Flames transfer Kaidon Salter signed with the Buffs. Salter is a veteran signal-caller who could have a shot to succeed Shedeur Sanders as Colorado’s starting QB next season.

With one season of college eligibility remaining, Salter could be a bridge quarterback to Julian “JuJu” Lewis, a prized class of 2025 signee. The position now appears to be a question mark for the Buffs, with two talented options in the fray: Salter, the seasoned vet, and Lewis, the talented incoming freshman.

With the Flames, Salter collected several accolades at the Group of Five level. A threat with both his arm and his legs, Salter provides a hefty arsenal to a Colorado team that will enter next season with College Football Playoff aspirations.

Sophomore surge

Salter led the Flames to an undefeated regular season in 2023, with Liberty’s only loss coming to the Oregon Ducks in the Fiesta Bowl. The then-sophomore racked up 3,965 all-purpose yards and 44 total touchdowns while earning the Conference USA Most Valuable Player award.

While Salter shined as a sophomore, this past season saw some bumps in the road. Liberty still finished the regular season 9-3, but Salter saw his performance dip in most categories, including passing touchdowns (15) and completion percentage (56.3%).

Salter is a true dual-threat quarterback, rushing for 2,013 yards and 21 touchdowns during his time with the Flames. Over half of those numbers came during his sophomore season, where he utilized breakaway speed to rack up 1,089 yards and 12 scores (6.7 yards per carry).
