Penn State didn’t win in a complete fashion against SMU, but their ability to dominate on the ground against an elite run-stopping defense while also shutting down the opposing offense with takeaways and pressure is another sign that this team can win in multiple ways.
At times, the Nittany Lions have relied on their passing attack to beat their opponents. Other times the running game is the reason for victory. And while the defense got a bad rap after their performance against Oregon, turning around and doing this to SMU was a reminder of what that unit can be when at their best.
To win the national championship, Penn State will have to put all of those elements together during in each contest they play, but it’s a great sign that they have the ability to do so with an offense that can move the ball both through the air and on the ground, and a defense that has the capability of wrecking games.
