5 takeaways from Week 16 win over Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles were riding high, heading into Sunday’s showdown against the Washington Commanders with a 10-game winning streak and looking to clinch the NFC East.

When things began, it looked like the Eagles may blow Washington away. The Commanders went three-and-out on their first drive, and Philly responded with a touchdown drive. On Washington’s next position, running back Brian Robinson Jr. fumbled, and the Eagles turned that turnover into points, and it was 14-0.

Behind rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Commanders would not quit, making it a 21-14 game before halftime. Finally, in the fourth quarter, Washington took a one-point lead when Daniels found Olamide Zaccheaus for a 49-yard score. The Eagles would kick back-to-back field goals, leaving Daniels two minutes and needing to score a touchdown to win the game.

That’s what he did, and the rest was history. The Commanders defeated the Eagles 36-33 and improved to 10-5 on the season.

Franchise quarterbacks put the team on their backs and will them to victory, regardless of what’s around them. That’s what Daniels did on Sunday. Facing the Eagles without two of his top receivers, Daniels lost another one in the third quarter when Dyami Brown went down. Brown had just made a big play before departing with a hamstring injury. Other players stepped up. Olamide Zaccheaus and Jamison Crowder each caught two touchdowns — their first of the season. Terry McLaurin caught five passes for 60, going over 1,000 yards for the fifth consecutive season. He also tied single-season franchise record for touchdown receptions.

Daniels led the Commanders with 81 yards rushing. He had little help, as Washington’s backs combined for just 33 yards. To make matters worse, the Commanders turned the ball over five times. All of this against the NFL’s No. 1-ranked defense. People wanting to see Daniels and head coach Dan Quinn land a signature win, saw it on Sunday. Daniels showed Washington fans a little bit of everything against the Eagles.
