There were a couple of issues on the offensive line Sunday. Left tackle Jaylon Moore, who was starting for the injured Trent Williams, went down with an injury during the game. That forced backup guard Spencer Burford to move in at left tackle. Then left guard Aaron Banks got hurt, but Burford was his backup, which pushed the 49ers to insert Nick Zakelj at left guard. That put San Francisco on its third-string left tackle and fourth-string left guard (Ben Bartch was the backup LG, but he’s on IR with a high ankle sprain).
Injuries aside, it’s clear the 49ers have to tweak their team-building strategy a little bit when it comes to the offensive line. That unit has been too inconsistent all year and it was ugly Sunday even before the injuries took effect. Depth on the OL is difficult to find, so it’s hard to blame them for not having a ton of quality down the roster at those five positions. On the other hand, they need to make a more concerted effort to find high-quality starting OL instead of just putting together passable players up front.
