The Florida football program saw another departure on Thursday when junior inside linebacker Shemar James announced his declaration for the 2025 NFL draft via Instagram. That makes him the first draft-bound Gator with remaining collegiate eligibility.
The 6-foot-1inch, 229-pound defender originally from Mobile, Alabama, played three seasons with the Orange and Blue stretching over 34 total games. In 2024, James started in all 13 matchups, amassing 64 tackles (34 solo), two sacks, four tackles for a loss, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
In 2023, he started his first eight games before sustaining a season-ending knee injury that required surgery to correct. He still put up solid numbers, including 55 tackles (24 solo), one sack and 5.5 tackles for a loss.
James played in all 13 games his freshman season, starting four at linebacker, recording 47 tackles (18 solo), two sacks, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He earned Freshman All-SEC honors and a CFN Freshman All-American Honorable Mention in 2022.
The linebacker room for Florida is looking a little thin after James’ departure along with Deuce Spurlock II, Derek Wingo and R.J. Moten. Expect Billy Napier and Co. to aggressively seek some assistance through the transfer portal over the coming months.
