How we graded the Week 17 loss

How we graded the Week 17 loss

The Tennessee Titans fell to the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium on Sunday in a Week 17 AFC South battle. The 20-13 loss puts the Titans’ record at 3-13 and sets them up with the second pick in the 2025 NFL draft, as of now. That could change based on the outcomes of next week’s games but suffice it to say that the Titans will have a top pick in the draft.

The Jaguars victory meant they swept the Titans for the second time in three years, and they did it without star quarterback Trevor Lawrence both times. That doesn’t look good for the Titans for so many reasons.

There are a lot of things the Titans need to address during the offseason, but first, let’s take a look at how we graded the Titans’ Week 17 loss to the Jaguars.

Offense: F

It’s hard to fail everyone on the offense, Calvin Ridley, Tyjae Spears, and Chigoziem Okonkwo all performed very well. But that’s the extent of anything good that happened on the offensive side of the ball on Sunday. Mason Rudolph threw an interception and fumbled the ball. Luckily the fumble was recovered by J.C. Latham. Rudolph also took three sacks, so while Spears and Ridley specifically had great games with good production, only Nick Vannett found the endzone on the sole pass he caught. The offensive line has to be a top priority this offseason, as well as finding a reliable quarterback (preferably one already established in the league).

Defense: F

How this defense played worse this week than they did against the Jaguars in Week 14 is mind boggling. They held the Jags scoreless through three quarters in the first meeting, but on the road, the Jags were up 10-0 after the first quarter. James Lynch and Jerome Baker both managed to sack Mac Jones, but only for one yard total. Jones walked away from that outing with a 122.2 quarterback rating against what is supposedly the top passing defense in the league. Clearly that was not the case on Sunday as Jones threw for 174 yards and two touchdowns.

Special Teams: C

Bringing in Matthew Wright was a good decision. He made both field goal attempts and the extra point. Ryan Stonehouse played as well as he normally does, but Tyjae Spears wasn’t on special teams duty as he filled in for the injured Tony…
