Iowa football rival coach set to interview with Chicago Bears

When the NFL comes calling, you answer the phone, regardless of who you are, what your current status is, and what your current contract situation is.

The most recent name to pick up the phone and answer that call is Matt Campbell, the Iowa State Cyclones head coach, as he is expected to interview for the head coaching job of the Chicago Bears.

The report comes from Brad Briggs of the Chicago Tribune who posted the breaking news via his account on X.

Matt Campbell has amassed a 99-66 overall record during his tenure in college which has spanned 14 seasons.

Campbell’s first breakthrough as a head coach came at Toledo when he took over in 2011-12. While leading Toledo, he went 35-15 over four full seasons and never had a losing record.

In 2016, Campbell made the jump to the Power Five where he took the head coaching job at Iowa State. In his first year, the Cyclones went 3-9, but have only had one losing season since as Campbell holds a 64-51 record at Iowa State.

Matt Campbell and the Iowa State Cyclones are coming off their best season in program history as they went 11-3, which included a trip to the Big 12 Championship and a Pop-Tarts Bowl win.

Matt Campbell holds a career record of 2-6 against the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Cy-Hawk Rivalry.

In December, Iowa State and Matt Campbell agreed to a long-term contract extension through the end of the 2032 season to keep him in Ames long-term. It remains to be seen if that will play into this situation.

The Chicago Bears moved on from head coach Matt Eberflus during the season and have begun the interview process calling on a myriad of different names to explore all options.
