The franchise tag can come in three forms: The non-exclusive tag, the exclusive tag, or the transitional tag. The non-exclusive and transitional tags are the most similar, they allow a tagged player to seek out other offers. If that player receives an offer, they must bring it back to their team to give them a chance to match it. Here’s where the difference is: With a non-exclusive tag, if the team decides not to match the offer, they receiver two first-round draft picks as compensation; With the transitional tag, there is no compensation if the former team decides not to match the new offer.
The exclusive tag binds a player to his current team.
Each team gets one franchise tag per year, unless they use a transitional tag, and then they get two. The last time the Titans used the franchise tag was for Derrick Henry in 2020, which was just the fifth time in franchise history the Titans used a franchise tag.
