Bailey Zappe, a third-year quarterback from Western Kentucky added his name to the Browns’ dreaded jersey of quarterbacks past. The quarterback struggled to move the ball against one of the best defenses in the NFL. Zappe threw 31 passes, completing 16 for 170 yards, scoring one touchdown, and throwing two interceptions.

Zappe didn’t have a successful day throwing the ball, but he was decisive when throwing. Zappe scanned the defenses, oftentimes determining the throw before the snap. Zappe was able to move the offense slowly downfield at points but it lso led to horrible interceptions.

Zappe faced difficulties when pushing the ball down the field. The quarterback’s arm isn’t strong enough to cut through the swirling wind inside Huntington Bank Field. When the quarterback threw it deep the ball lingered in the air before slowly descending. The pause allowed defensive backs to make a play on the ball.

Zappe is a smart quarterback, and I loved watching him play at Western Kentucky. He was a fantastic surgical pocket passer at the college level. However, at the NFL level, Zappe leaves a lot to be desired. The post-snap processing that made him great in college has yet to develop at the NFL level.

The Browns would be wise to renovate their quarterback room this offseason. The position needs to be a major site of competition in 2025. I want Jameis Winston to compete next season.
