DT’s Shakel Brown & Phil Hoskins Sign UFL Contracts

Let's Talk XFL | The Beginning [Ep. 1]

On Tuesday, two DT’s signed contracts for the UFL season. Shakel Brown joined the Houston Roughnecks, while Phil Hoskins was added by the St. Louis Battlehawks.

DT Shakel Brown | Houston Roughnecks

The Houston Roughnecks have seen quite a bit of roster turnover this offseason, and continue that trend with their latest pickup. Houston has signed DT Shakel Brown to the roster, who brings some NFL experience to the table.

Shakel played his college football at Troy, although it did include one year at Itawamba CC. At Troy, Shakel totaled 58 tackles and 4.5 sacks, starting in five of 29 games played. He ended up earning an opportunity with the Tennessee Titans, signing as an UDFA in May of 2023.

Brown was then picked up by the 49ers, where he spent almost a year on their practice squad. Most recently, Shakel was with the Miami Dolphins in October. He’s a young prospect with plenty of upside, and fits the mold of what GM Will Lewis has been looking for the past few months.

DT Phil Hoskins | St. Louis Battlehawks

It’s been an intriguing offseason for the St. Louis Battlehawks, as they continue to prune and retool this roster in an effort to make it to their first Championship in franchise history. Their latest addition is DT Phil Hoskins, who fills out a talented defensive line unit that is shaping up to be very talented across the board.

Phil played his college football at Kentucky, with 53 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, and an interception to his name.
