Florida cornerback Jameer Grimsley had an ACL revision surgery performed on his right knee Monday, according to Swamp247.
Grimsley left Alabama for Florida during the winter transfer period as a true freshman, following the surprise retirement of Nick Saban. Although he earned his expected redshirt, Grimsley played 37 snaps across two games for the Gators as injuries mounted late in the season. He finished the year with a 64.0 defensive grade from Pro Football Focus.
“We’ve got two rookie DBs out there playing tonight, Greg Smith and Jameer Grimsley are out there,” head coach Billy Napier said after beating Florida State. “So yeah, I think next man up, big time in special teams. I think we have a lot of players that have played different roles.”
Grimsley did not play for Florida against Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl, due to the injured right knee. He’s the fourth Florida defensive back to undergo postseason surgery this offseason. Dijon Johnson and Devin Moore each had a labrum repaired and STAR Sharif Denson underwent a procedure on his left foot for a fractured metatarsal.
Revision surgery implies the reinjury of an initial ACL tear or that the injury never healed properly in the first place. Either way, it’s a more difficult surgery for the surgeons and puts a 6-12 month timeline on Grimsley’s return. With a redshirt already burned, getting back on the field is a priority for a second-year cornerback.
Fortunately for Florida, Grimsley is not a major piece of the Gators’ secondary plans next season. Cormani McClain joins Johnson and Moore as viable starters to replace Jason Marshall Jr. (draft) and Ja’Keem Jackson (transfer portal). Alonzo Allen, Teddy Foster and incoming four-star recruit Ben Hanks Jr. are also depth options.
