The New York Jets will be looking for a new head coach in 2025 after the Robert Saleh regime failed to produce a winning season, let alone a playoff berth in four seasons.
Jets Wire will be breaking down each candidate that receives an interview detailing their experience as well as the highs and lows of their coaching careers. In the end, we’ll determine if the candidate is worth a shot or if the Jets should pass for someone better.
For the next ride on the Jets coaching carousel, we take a look at Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator and former Chicago Bears head coach, Matt Nagy.
Offensive Failures in Chicago

Nagy was hired by the Chicago Bears in 2018 after serving as the Chiefs offensive coordinator under Andy Reid. Interestingly, the Jets tried to hire Nagy to be their offensive coordinator in 2017 under then head coach Todd Bowles, but Reid blocked the team’s request and kept him in Kansas City.
His first season in Chicago was a major success as he finished 12-4 and won the NFC North. QB Mitch Trubisky put up career numbers that year with 3,223 yards and 24 touchdowns. However, the Bears didn’t make it past the wild card round, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Nagy missed the playoffs in 2019 as the Bears went 8-8 and finished in third place in the NFC North. Chicago’s offense was the primary reason for their disappointing finish as they ranked 29th in total offense. Trubisky’s numbers took a dip in yards, although he still finished with over 3,000 yards passing that season. This would be a recurring theme for Nagy during the rest of his time in Chicago.
For the 2020 season, Nagy made a few changes to his offensive coaching staff and acquired quarterback Nick Foles to compete with Trubisky. The Bears started out strong that season, winning five of their first six games and in first place in the NFC North. However, the changes did very little to help the offense as they still struggled moving the football.
The Bears lost seven of their last ten to end the season, but finished in second place and clinched a playoff spot thanks to a tiebreaker over the Arizona Cardinals. Chicago’s offense was a disaster only managing 11 first downs and 239 yards of total offense in a 21-9 loss in the wild card round to the New Orleans Saints.
Nagy’s only losing season in Chicago was in 2021 and it was also his last with the Bears. With Trubisky gone via free agency, the Bears selected Justin Fields to be their quarterback of the future…
