In 2012, Texas A&M legend Johnny Manziel set college football on fire, seemingly coming out of nowhere to lead the first-year SEC team to an 11-win season and a Cotton Bowl victory.
After Ryan Tannehill’s departure, there was no clear successor, and new A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin had an open competition that ultimately came down to Manziel and Jameill Showers. After winning the job, their tune-up game was canceled due to weather issues, and he had to cut his teeth on the national stage as a redshirt freshman against the Florida Gators.
It wasn’t his breakout game in the 20-17 loss, but it foreshadowed his elite dual-threat ability, leading to a record-setting season and a Heisman Trophy. As each game passed, the exciting play style of “Johnny Football” started to take hold of the national stage, grab it, and not let go after a 345-yard two-touchdown performance against the No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.
Manizel continued to stack wins and mind-blowing stats for the rest of the season, collecting every award under the sun. Then, on December 8, 2012, he became the first freshman to win the Heisman trophy and the second winner in Aggie history behind David Crow. This catapulted him to stardom and fame, unlike any other athlete at the time, but where did his memorable rank among the all-time greats?
