–Washington gained 312 yards and picked up 15 first downs in the first half
–The Lions lost starting CB Amik Robertson to a bad arm/elbow injury on the second defensive play of the game. Kindle Vildor replaced him.
–Detroit’s defense registered one QB pressure in the first half, per Dan Miller on the Lions radio broadcast
–Washington won the turnover battle 4-0 and scored a defensive TD
–Goff missed a series after getting clobbered on the pick-six return. Teddy Bridgewater completed his pass attempt for three yards on the drive that was capped by Jameson Williams’ long TD run.
–In his return from a knee injury, David Montgomery gained just 4 yards on his first four carries. He was hit before the line of scrimmage on three of them.
–Washington’s interior defensive line consistently moved the pocket into Jared Goff’s comfort zone and it showed in Goff’s relative struggles on intermediate throws.
–Sam LaPorta got one target after his spectacular touchdown catch.
–Safeties Ifeatu Melifonwu and Brian Branch each left the game with injuries. Branch did return but clearly wasn’t right in the final handful of Washington drives. Undrafted rookie Morice Norris played extensively in Melifonwu’s absence.
–Even before the late-game injuries, the Lions safety trio of Branch, Melifonwu and Kerby Joseph all had subpar performances. From Joseph’s poor angle on Terry McLAurin’s long catch-and-run TD to Melifonwu not realizing that Daniels was running with the ball right next to him on a later conversion, the strength of the Lions defense was a weakness in this one.
–The decision to have Jameson Williams attempt an option pass in a key situation with the game still very much within reach is a decision I will never understand. Ponderous.
–It probably needs to be said that Jayden Daniels played an outstanding game, as did the Washington offensive line. They deserve credit for winning their second straight playoff road game.
