The Miami Dolphins’ subpar depth chart at the quarterback position proved costly in 2024. Skylar Thompson beat out Mike White for the backup job in August, but when Tua Tagovailoa went down with an injury in Week 2, it didn’t take long at all for it to become clear that Thompson wasn’t going to cut it.
Tyler Huntley took the reins in Week 4 and ended up starting five games for the Dolphins, but the team went 2-4 in its six games without Tagovailoa.
After the season, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier told reporters that the team made an effort to sign a more reliable backup quarterback in the 2024 offseason, but couldn’t get it done.
“We were in on a number of topflight backup quarterbacks in the league,” Grier said. “We were runner-ups for a couple of them that we wanted to get here, and for some financial restraints and compensatory pick stuff, we just couldn’t go to those, to the prices.”
But with the urgency dialed up after a rough 2024 season, here are six players the Dolphins could pursue at the quarterback position:

The first decision for Miami is Huntley, who is set to become a free agent in March.
In his five starts with the Dolphins, Huntley completed 64.7 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and three interceptions. His year included a stellar performance in a 20-3 win against the Browns that was promptly followed by an awful one against the Jets in the Week 18 finale.
Would a proper offseason and training camp in Mike McDaniel’s offense yield more showings like his Week 17 game in Cleveland? It probably wouldn’t be too expensive for the Dolphins to re-sign Huntley and find out what he looks like in camp.
Marcus Mariota (Commanders)
Mariota is with his fourth team in as many years after not working out as the Titans’ No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft. While the No. 1 pick in that class, Jameis Winston, is also set to hit free agency, Mariota seems like the better fit in Miami.
While Winston is still waiting for the Lord to deliver him from pick-sixes, Mariota isn’t quite as turnover prone. He completed 34 of his 44 regular season passes in Washington this season with four touchdowns and no interceptions. The Commanders have also used his legs to their advantage with the backup recording 92 rushing yards and a…
