Speculation on mystery Cowboys HC target

Say this about the Joneses: they do like “their guys,” even after they stop being exclusively theirs.

Another former Cowboys staffer appears to have entered the chat for the team’s in-progress coaching search, though it’s not immediately clear how serious the idea may be at all.

Rich Bisaccia, currently the Packers’ special teams coordinator and assistant head coach, has reportedly drawn “some level of interest” from the Cowboys for the head coaching position left vacant ten days ago by the departure of Mike McCarthy.

NFL insider Josina Anderson first floated the report of the Cowboys having had “informal conversation with one other head coach prospect,” pointing out that “Deion Sanders is not the only one in said category.”

With hours, one outlet was speculating that Bisaccia was “believed to be” the “mystery candidate.”

Shortly thereafter, Joseph Hoyt of All DLLS confirmed in a post to X Thursday that the Cowboys “have had (emphasis there) some level of interest” in Bisaccia. But, Hoyt cautioned, “Not sure how far that interest could go.”

It is critical to point out that Bisaccia still has a year left on his current Packers contract. Per Ed Werder of WFAA, the Cowboys have not made any request to the Packers regarding an interview with Bisaccia.

Tampering with an employee under contract with another club could result in punishment, including a loss of draft picks.

Bisaccia’s availability for a head coaching gig is a huge question mark, but his credentials are not.

The 64-year-old was the Cowboys’ assistant head coach and special teams coordinator from 2013 through 2017 under Jason Garrett. A New York native, Bisaccia has additionally held that same dual role with the Buccaneers, Chargers, Raiders, and Packers. He was, notably, the interim head coach in Las Vegas for 12 games in 2021 following the in-season resignation of Jon Gruden. Bisaccia led the silver and black to a playoff appearance after going 7-5 to finish the year but was not retained for the next season.

Prior to joining Tampa Bay’s staff in 2002, Bisaccia worked for several college programs- Wayne State, South Carolina, Clemson, and Mississippi- over an 18-year span.
