And with that discipline, as Munnerlyn picked up when he started coaching again, the hope is that they return to their previous levels of on-field success.

Sophomore linebacker and defensive back Christopher Williams watched the proceedings from the side, then stood next to the coach he might be taller than. Williams said he’s mostly familiar with Munnerlyn from seeing his highlights online and recognizing the name of a former Panther. That’s understandable since many of these high schoolers were born around the time Munnerlyn was being drafted in 2009, but they also have quickly picked up on his story, and what he’s selling.

A premature kid who didn’t go to the most affluent high school in his hometown, who worked his way to a college scholarship and an NFL career that lasted a decade, that’s an easy story to sell.

Especially now that Munnerlyn’s selling the discipline it took him to get there, and to get to today.

“It’s impressive; I know that he knows what he’s talking about,” Williams said. “So you just hear him talk up there, his passion up there, and I’m excited to see where this goes, and I think he’s going to do good things for this program.

“His story, it just shows resilience, and if you work hard enough, you can get there no matter what the odds are against you. It shows that if you believe in yourself, and you have people around you that believe, you can do whatever you want.”
