(Update: 12:44 p.m.): Darren Mougey has reportedly been hired as the Jets’ general manager:
Previous coverage:
After striking right when the iron got hot when hiring a new head coach, the New York Jets have continued a slow process as it relates to naming their next general manager.
Earlier this week, Glenn was hired as head coach in New York. The announcement came one day after he had a second interview for that job.
On Thursday, reports indicated the Jets will be looking to hire one of three GM candidates by the end of the day.
Those are:
- Lance Newmark (Washington Commanders assistant GM)
- Darren Mougey (Denver Broncos assistant GM)
- Trey Brown (Cincinnati Bengals senior personnel executive)
As of Friday morning, that ended up not being the case. No GM has been hired in NY just yet… but we have a similar follow-up note.
The Athletic reports the decision will now be made by Friday… and that Newmark might be out of the picture:
There’s a sense that the #Jets will make a decision on who will be GM as soon as today — and the expectation is that it will be Darren Mougey or Trey Brown.
Mougey and Brown both interviewed yesterday.

On the same day as Glenn’s second interview, Newmark had another interview with the Jets. Many have connected Newmark’s past with Glenn as a sign that the Jets might want to pair those two together… but not so fast.
Newmark and Glenn’s careers overlapped while they were with the Detroit Lions.
Evidently that might not completely be the case considering two more GM candidates had second interviews following Glenn being hired.
Mougey and Brown spoke for a second time in New York on Thursday. Reports indicated the Jets will be looking to move very fast after those chats.
It remains to be seen what direction the Jets go in.
One could assume that the team was not blown away by Newmark considering the new interviews, so him being eliminated might make sense.
However, other past reports indicated Newmark is still in the running as of earlier this week.
