The Bills refused to go away, however, and trimmed the Chiefs’ advantage to just five points when Allen found wide receiver Mack Hollins for a 34-yard touchdown in the closing seconds of the first half. It was part of 12 unanswered points for Buffalo, which took the lead with a 1-yard touchdown run by tailback James Cook late in the third quarter.
The Bills failed to convert consecutive two-point tries during that stretch though, and despite back-to-back trips to the end zone, Buffalo only had a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter. Still, the Bills appeared primed to add to that advantage with a drive into Chiefs’ territory on their next series before Allen was stuffed on a short fourth-down attempt, flipping possession back over to the Chiefs.
Kansas City didn’t waste the opportunity, either, as Mahomes led a five-play, 59-yard scoring drive that ended with a 10-yard run that Mahomes took in himself. Mahomes then found wide receiver Justin Watson for a two-point conversion that put Kansas City ahead by seven.
