Jets’ ‘most-improved player’ in 2024 is a bit of a surprise

The New York Jets did not have a season to remember in 2024 as the team finished with a 5-12 record.

Not exactly what many expected.

Even so, there were some bright spots and Pro Football Focus highlighted who was one of the brightest in their eyes.

The football analytics outlet tabbed offensive lineman John Simpson as the “most-improved player” for the Jets this year… in a bit of a surprise.

Simpson did have a positive season in how own right. According to the metrics from the football analytics outlet, his 74.2 overall grade in 2024 was the best of his career.

Simpson did have a positive year, but another candidate could be linebacker Jamien Sherwood. He filled in positively for veteran CJ Mosley for most of 2024 positively. Both players would have been deserving.

As for why PFF went with Simpson, see the explanation below:

The Jets offensive line had one of the lowest pressure rates in the NFL in 2024, even if it did allow the 14th-most sacks in the NFL. However, John Simpson was a big reason the pressure rate was so low. Simpson was impressive in his first season with the Jets after spending one year with the Ravens, as he allowed just 20 pressures on 682 pass-blocking snaps, a 3.4% pressure rate.

Simpson had career-high grades across the board, earning a 77.3 overall grade, the 13th highest among guards, and a 79.2 run blocking grade, which also ranked top 10 at the position. He was able to be a sturdy contributor on the interior of the offensive line, along with Alijah Vera-Tucker.
