“He’s a really good starting QB”

“He’s a really good starting QB”

The case of Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith is a rather curious one. He is a two-time Pro Bowler who has led the Seahawks to three-consecutive winning seasons. Yet there are many out there, even among the 12th Man, who don’t seem to buy into Smith as a viable option at quarterback. However, there are just as many out there in the media who are as high as can be on what Smith brings to the table.

One such media member is Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner. The two-time league MVP and Super Bowl champion-turned-analyst was recently on The Brock and Salk Show last week, and the topic of Geno Smith was the first one they asked. Brock Huard point blank asked of Warner “Fill in the blank: Geno Smith is_______”

To which Warner wasted little time responding “… a really good starting quarterback in the National Football League. To me, it’s as simple as that. I don’t think we sit back and say he’s in that ‘elite’ category, yet, but I think he’s really good. He does a lot of things really well. I’ve been really impressed and felt he’s played really solid football these last few years.”

When co-host Mike Salk asked Warner if he thinks Smith can get to that said “elite” status for the first time in his mid-thirties, Warner said that’s a hard question to answer.

“If you would have looked at Geno Smith in his early twenties, you’d have said ‘he’s got no chance to get there!’ So what he’s done and how he’s grown and transformed throughout his career to become what he is, has shown a whole bunch of growth. Can he get there? I don’t know the answer to that… at this time.”

Warner’s statement is a fair one. Can Smith truly become elite or reach any level close to it? History would certainly tell us that it is not likely. Although, no one thought Smith would ever reach this level. No one after his days with the Jets believed Smith could resume being a full-time starting quarterback in this league.

Smith has already defied the odds and conventional thinking multiple times these last few years. Why not one more?
