Denver Broncos linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite was arrested on Sunday “on suspicion of second degree assault of a police officer,” according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.
Wilhoite, 38, was booked in Denver’s downtown jail and he has a court date set for Monday. In a statement released to 9News and other outlets, the Broncos said they are aware of a situation and are “in the process of gathering more information.”
Citing a a probable cause statement, Klis reported that Wilhoite left a car unattended at the Denver International Airport. When he returned and an officer told him he could not leave a vehicle unattended. Wilhoite allegedly told the officer to “shut the (expletive) up,” and things escalated from there.
From the Klis story:
Wilhoite then approached the officer and bumped his chest into the officer, causing the officer to step back, the statement says. The officer shoved Wilhoite back and then Wilhoite punched the officer, causing the officer to fall to the ground, according to the statement.
As Wilhoite got into his car, the officer used his taser, according to police. After the cycle ended, Wilhoite closed the door and drove away, the statement says.
Wilhoite started his football career in the original United Football League with the Omaha Nighthawks in 2011. He joined the San Francisco 49ers later that year and went on to spend six seasons with the Niners.
Wilhoite played linebacker and special teams in the NFL. His final year as a player came with the Seattle Seahawks in 2017. Wilhoite then transitioned to coaching as a special teams assistant with the New Orleans Saints in 2019 when Sean Payton served as their head coach.
Wilhoite left the Saints for a linebackers coach job with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021 and he reunited with Payton with the Broncos in 2023.
