It was a busy weekend in the UFL, as multiple teams made moves to either improve their rosters – or clean up some space. The Houston Roughnecks added DE Byron Vaughns, while the DC Defenders cut two defensive players.

Houston has made a bit of an adjustment at defensive end. They’ve brought in free agent Byron Vaughns, who is no stranger to playing football in Texas, as a former Baylor product.
Byron actually began his college career at Texas, but did not see much action across three years. He had 14 tackles there. Vaughns decided to transfer to Utah State in 2021, which was the right move. Byron posted 100 tackles and 6.5 sacks across two seasons.
For his final year of eligibility, Vaughns played at Baylor, and impressed. He totaled 32 tackles, eight TFL’s, and three sacks – proving to be a key rotational piece for the Bears.

This led to an NFL opportunity with the Cowboys, signing as an UDFA in May of 2024. He was let go in August, though, and has remained a free agent since. Now, he looks to get his pro career off the ground in the UFL, with Houston.
In turn, the Roughnecks have released Vaughn Taylor Jr., an edge rusher who was added to the roster this offseason. Taylor, the former Mauler, had quite a bit of success in Pittsburgh, but has been a free agent since 2023.
