UFL Week One: Overreaction, Or Reality?

Today we’re breaking down some of the biggest reactions from week one of the 2025
UFL season. What are the fans saying? Is it an overreaction or is it reality?

“Kellen Mond was a mistake at QB for San Antonio”

Overreaction or Reality: Overreaction

Entering into the season former Texas A&M QB and 3rd round NFL draft pick Kellen
Mond was one of the most hyped players in the UFL. All that changed Saturday when
the Brahmas were defeated 33-9 by their in-state rival Renegades. Mond went 17/31
passing for 159 yards and 0 touchdowns.

While he did not turnover the football, Mond was largely underwhelming as the Brahmas struggled to gain any traction on offense. His shortcomings were also exaggerated by Luis Perez’ dominant performance on offense for the Renegades.

While Mond certainly did not play his best Saturday, fans’ heavy criticisms or even calls for benching the QB are most definitely an overreaction. Mond has had just a few weeks to learn the entire offense and develop chemistry with his receivers. Expect for the QB to make major steps forward the next couple of weeks.

Before the season kicked off, I was willing to give the UFL the benefit of the doubt. I believed and hoped that by placing the kickoff game and largely weekend as a whole in markets that had struggled previously- they might drum up bigger success.
Unfortunately I was entirely wrong.

By leading off with Houston, the UFL not only harmed its image with poor attendance but also harmed its TV ratings. This trend continued throughout the week with the (unexpected) blowout by Arlington in the unorthodox looking Choctaw Stadium, followed by a relatively good game on Sunday in front of a Showboats skeleton crew in Memphis, both also not helping.
