Week five in the UFL kicked off Friday night, with the red hot Birmingham Stallions hosting the winless Memphis Showboats. It’s a key game for both teams, as the Stallions attempt to keep pace with the Panthers – while the Showboats search for their first victory.
Heading into this game, Birmingham was fresh off of back-to-back wins, that came in the final moments in both affairs. The Stallions have not played their best offensive football yet, but showed growth against Houston. With Matt Corral suffering an injury, Case Cookus got the start in this one against his former team – which was a fun storyline to watch unfold.
On the Memphis Showboats side of things, they were desperately trying to find something positive. Jim Turner is now officially the head coach, and handed the reins to 26 year old Dresser Winn, who made his first start (and saw his first snaps of the UFL season) tonight.
Let’s take a look at what went down at Protective Stadium.
First Quarter
Memphis opened up with possession of the football, but got off to a rough start. A bad snap, followed up by two underthrown balls from Dresser Winn under pressure, resulted in a punt. Birmingham wouldn’t have much more success with Cookus, though, who missed an open Jace Sternberger on 3rd and 11 – and the Stallions sent it back.
This time around, Winn and the Showboats made magic happen, in the magic city. On 3rd down, Winn unleashed a deep ball to Dee Anderson, who beat Steven Gilmore for a 78 yard touchdown.
Memphis converted on the two point try, as a penalty allowed them to run the play from the two yard line. Jalen Jackson ran it in, and the Showboats had an 8-0…
