DC Defenders Release Joshua Matthews & Josh Proctor

On Monday, the DC Defenders released both WR Joshua Matthews, and S Josh Proctor. As DC nears a playoff berth, GM Von Hutchins continues to refine this roster – and has let two depth pieces go in the process.

WR Joshua Matthews was inactive the entire season. He was with the team in camp, but got cut in late March. He was brought back due to Ty Scott going on IR, but didn’t see any action with the team. The former McNeese State standout has plenty of talent, but couldn’t find a way to crack the rotation with such a stout WR room in DC.

On the other hand, Josh Proctor played in three games for the Defenders, starting one game at safety. He filled in due to some of the various injuries the team has dealt with in the secondary, and surprisingly gets let go now after totaling seven tackles and an interception.

Proctor actually made the game-winning pick in week five against Arlington. It was a down to the wire matchup, and one that could have gone a different direction without Proctor’s efforts.

One has to wonder if Josh’s release is due to the return of Montae Nicholson. Montae went to IR in week one, but is eligible to return now, if fully healthy. Proctor was re-signed in week two, because Montae went to IR. Time will tell, but seeing Nicholson back in that secondary would be a breath of fresh air for DC Blake Williams, as his unit has had a difficult time the last few games.
