In what was one of the strangest moves we’ve seen this week, the DC Defenders swapped safeties once again. After releasing Josh Proctor to get Montae Nicholson activated from IR, just one day later DC saw the two switch places for the third time this season.
According to a league source, we’re told that the UFL deemed Montae medically unqualified to return, hence why he had to go back on IR.
It’s a very weird situation, as Montae has been on IR since week one. With a minimum of five weeks on that list, Nicholson did meet those requirements as we’re heading into week eight.
That said, for whatever reason, Nicholson now goes back to IR – meaning that his UFL season is essentially over. Josh Proctor will be with the group the rest of the way, with seven tackles and a game winning interception in the few games he’s played in.
Stallions Release Austin Watkins
In other UFL related news, the Birmingham Stallions cut WR Austin Watkins Jr. This move isn’t too much of a shocker, given his lack of a consistent role this season. Watkins has missed the last couple of weeks with a back injury, and with the success of other wideouts in Birmingham, finds himself on the outside looking in.
Austin was with Birmingham in 2023, and saw some success that season before spending time in the NFL with the Browns and Eagles. He returned to the Stallions for the 2025 UFL season, but had just two catches for 13 yards on six targets.
Watkins’ is likely done for the UFL season across the board, given the current status of his health.
