St. Louis Battlehawks Sign Mac McCain III & Shaka Toney

With the playoffs in sight, the St. Louis Battlehawks have added CB Mac McCain III and DE Shaka Toney to the roster – bringing depth to the table as they’re still dealing with some injuries.

DE Shaka Toney

With Chris Garrett done for the year, Dave Boller and the Battlehawks bring in Shaka Toney – who’s got some NFL experience at EDGE.

Toney played his college ball at Penn State, with 112 tackles and 20 sacks to his name during four seasons of action.

His success at Penn State resulted in the Washington Commanders selecting him in the 7th round of the 2021 NFL Draft, where he spent a couple of seasons. Shaka ended up posting 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks during his time there.

Most recently, Toney was with the Dallas Cowboys, after he was reinstated by the NFL. Shaka had been suspended back in 2022 for betting on NFL games.

While it’s unlikely that Shaka will actually see the field this weekend, he’s an NFL vet that St. Louis could potentially look to if needed – and, if anything, get a look at what he could do for them next season.

CB Mac McCain III

Mac McCain III is back in the spring scene. He formerly spent some time with the San Antonio Brahmas, during UFL Training Camp in 2024.

Mac McCain had an interesting career at North Carolina A&T. He burst onto the scene as a true freshman with 50 tackles and six interceptions (three pick sixes), dominating week in and week out.

In 2019, as a sophomore, he earned first-team all MEAC honors despite missing his last four games – finishing the season with 37 tackles and two interceptions.

After not having a junior season due to COVID-19, McCain ended up signing as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos in 2021. He was claimed by the Eagles later that year, and registered three tackles with the team in two games.
Despite being cut by the Brahmas, McCain did get another NFL opportunity – this time with the Saints. He was waived on August 27th, 2024.
