Practice Report (7/25): Notes from the sideline

* Practice featured a lot of short passes, from quick passes to the wide receivers, to screen passes and check downs. The team did work outside of the red zone for the first time, stretching the field with a few deep passes.

* Russell Wilson went to Malik Nabers on his first two throws during 7-on-7. On the second attempt, he connected on a deep in-cut after a brief bobble by Nabers for an explosive play. Wilson has looked to Nabers frequently through the first three practices, as they build chemistry after Nabers did not do any 7-on-7 or team work in the spring.

* Later, Wilson hit Nabers on the biggest play of the day, a beautifully thrown deep ball down the right sideline. Paulson Adebo was with Nabers step for step until he lost his footing, and Nabers caught the pass and scored a 50+ yard touchdown.

* There were two other excellent throws during 7-on-7. Tommy DeVito squeezed the ball into a small window to Beaux Collins on a crossing pattern. To end the period, Jameis Winston thew a ball with nice touch right over the shoulder of undrafted free agent wide receiver Jordan Bly for a big gain down the left sideline.

* Deonte Banks continues to play tight coverage; today, he made up ground late to knock away a deep pass intended for Darius Slayton. Tyler Nubin got his hands on the ball, too, coming down from the safety position to knock away a pass to Malik Nabers. Korie Black and Dru Phillips forced incompletions with good coverage.

* Dane Belton and Tomon Fox got into the backfield for potential sacks. Abdul Carter continues to challenge the edge with his speed to reduce the width of the passing pocket. Chauncey Gholston got near the quarterback on a pass rush and Kayvon Thibodeaux had a would-be tackle for loss on a run and a sack later on in the day, forcing Jameis Winston to scramble out of the backfield.

* Practice ended with two competitive “move the ball” periods. The first team offense took it down near the red zone but the aforementioned pass break-up by Dru Phillips ended the drive.

* Jameis Winston started the next drive and moved the ball down the field with several quick passes. Cam Skattebo caught one of those passes, and did a good job of setting up his blockers on a screen by staying inside. Jaxson Dart took over the last few plays and finished the drive with a touchdown on a throw to Skattebo towards the right sideline.

* There was one scary moment in practice. After a downfield…
