Browns practice in pads on Day 5

Pads might have come on during Monday’s training camp practice, but there was another important element to Monday’s practice happening at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus.

The Browns held Rainbow Day, presented by University Hospital’s Rainbow Babies & Children’s, which raised awareness and money for Rainbow children and created life-long memories for the patients and their families in attendance.

On the field, the players practiced in pads for the first time during training camp. As per the NFL, pads could not go on until Monday. So, fans in attendance heard the sound of contact throughout CrossCountry Mortgage Campus as the day finally arrived. Head Coach Kevin Stefanski explained the importance of taking things slow.

“It is important that when you get the pads on, offense, defense, special teams, you have to get acclimated to your pads,” Stefanski said. “Quarterbacks throwing in shoulder pads, people catching shoulder pads, etc. But by the same token, while, yes, it’s physical, we don’t want a bunch of guys on the ground. That’s not the intention of putting the pads on. It is still to use our technique and still to be smart when it’s Browns versus Browns.”

Although there was minimal tackling, the 90-degree heat and high-speed drills gave the Browns the chance to adapt to the feeling of playing in pads one step at a time. Stefanski reiterated the idea of building the physicality and toughness up.

“We want the players to get comfortable in their pads,” Stefanski said. “There is an element of literally just throwing and catching, which you’re not allowed to do in your shoulder pads previous to now. So, getting used to it. And then the physicality will ramp up.”

Important topics will be celebrated for the rest of Week Two, so stay tuned online and catch up on everything day five below.
