3— McDermott remains positive despite injuries

With a handful of injuries popping up throughout camp, head coach Sean McDermott is optimistic because they are happening before the season as opposed to during.

“Injuries come up, they do, they come up at different points in the season. I’d rather have them now than in the playoffs, so that’s my hope at this point,” shared McDermott.

A total of 12 players were ruled out of practicing today by McDermott. In addition, cornerback Dorian Strong was not mentioned but didn’t practice today. He was seen out on the sidelines with no helmet and didn’t participate in team drills. Running back James Cook was expected to practice today but did not.

With the team shifting its attention to the preseason, McDermott wants to focus on the players that are available.

“We move forward. It’s an opportunity for somebody else to step up, show us what they’ve got. And the team moves forward. That’s the nature of the business,” added McDermott.

With kicker Tyler Bass being one of the injured players, having a kicker for this weekend’s preseason game is on McDermott’s mind. But just like at the Return of Blue and Red, running back Ray Davis may have an opportunity to contribute.

“I think it’s good for Ray to get a little bit of an emergency kicker role during the season, to get maybe a little small warm-up or maybe an extra point. See if we can score and get extra points here or there,” shared McDermott.

Overall, McDermott’s feelings about the end of training camp were clear.

“I think the whole team has grown… I think we’ve had a good camp. I didn’t think we were where we needed to be at the Red and Blue a week ago, and these guys have focused in and made some huge progress this last week,” shared McDermott.
