Commit A.J. Surace’s film displays star potential

Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh praises Rutgers, Greg Schiano

This week, Rutgers football landed New Jersey’s top-rated quarterback AJ Surace. This now marks consecutive recruiting classes where Rutgers has landed one of the top quarterbacks in the region.

(In the 2023 recruiting class, Rutgers got a commitment from Ajani Sheppard).

As for Surace, the 2024 prospect committed to the Scarlet Knights, announcing his commitment on his Twitter account on Sunday afternoon.

According to 247Sports, the three-star recruit is ranked No. 9 in New Jersey and 32nd in the nation.

Surace completed 56.7 percent of his passes in 2022, going 131 for 231 on the season. The young prospect out of Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, NJ, racked up 1732 yards in the air, throwing 21 touchdowns and six interceptions. Surace is a pro-style quarterback with a strong arm and a ton of accuracy. He is a projected Power Fiver starter, receiving offers from Rutgers, Boston College, Duke, Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, and Tennessee.

Film Analysis

Surace (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) has an established size with a body frame to add additional weight. For a young prospect, he has a strong understanding of reading defenses.

This shouldn’t be a shock considering his father is head coach at Princeton.

Surace doesn’t panic in the pocket, staying calm under pressure. Making pre-snap reads, Surace does an excellent job taking care of the football. His size allows him to have a high release point, not allowing defenders to knock his passes down. The future Scarlet Knight can throw the short pass and the deep ball and he has excellent footwork. His quick release makes it difficult for defenses to sack him. Surace looks comfortable throwing the football over the middle and throws the deep ball nicely, adding touch when needed.

All told, he does an excellent job keeping his eyes downfield on the move, rarely taking unnecessary risks. He has a high football IQ, moving defenders with his eyes to open up throwing windows.
